Ever been to a silent auction? If you have, then you know that it's more laid back and less stressful than a standard auction. If you haven't, then Thursday, December 3rd is your chance. The GDAA, AMA, DCS, and IABC are holding a combination holiday party/silent auction at the NCR Country Club (map) at 6pm. The theme this year is “Meet Me at the Club”, and it's all about bringing back the glitz and celebrating the renewed optimism and condence of the late 1930s.
Everyone's invited to drop by, and the event organizers are also looking for things to auction off. This is a great opportunity to get your business' name or product out there. This is what the event organizers have to say:
The sooner you donate, the more you will benefit from the pre-event publicity which includes an item/donor list posted on our Web site(s), e-mail blasts, and more... plus, this year we’ve added Twitter… as donations come in we may send out “tweets” about the newest auction item(s) and who the generous donor was.
Check out the GDAA website for more info on how to donate, see the list of items up for auction so far, and stop by the event to make your bid.

Tuesday's Adobe User Group meeting was an eye opener. I walked in clueless about After Effects, and I walked out wanting to tear into the program and make my own animations. Andy Nick and Brian Ward showed some well-designed video/animations they have created for Real Art Design Group, as well as one cool side project, then they broke them down and showed how they got the effects we had just seen. It would be hard to make that kind of work easy, but those guys certainly made it look tempting. Thanks to Bruce Linebaugh and MCA-I for co-sponsoring this event, bringing some real-world After Effects examples, and of course for providing the pizza and cookies.
I was also impressed with the way people piped in, adding in new tips for using the program. I was glad that although we had a large group, people still felt comfortable enough to participate in the discussion.
Andy Nick and Brian Ward are colleagues at Real Art Design Group, often collaborating on projects from creative development to production. They will demo a few of their video/animation projects that were made possible by After Effects, and show you a few tips and tricks along the way.

Ben Nicholson of Lightborne gave an inspiring presentation of his work and his creative development process on July 28 for our Adobe User Group. We had an crowd of about 30-35 people, who had a chance to ask him questions ranging from general creativity to some nitty-gritty technical challenges.
Some notes from Ben's talk regarding the process of creating animation:
Find where the creative "walls" of the project are
Invite everyone to the initial brainstorm, then narrow down the team based on their ideas
Pick music at the start of the project to set the tone and tempo
Having an in-house photography studio saves money
Most important: manage client expectations... keep expectations reasonable, then exceed them whenever possible and you'll have a happy client
